Workshops of the International Conference Friday 2 June 10:30 - 12:00 a.m.In French only It is time to speak about football differently than
in warlike terms... It is necessary to cease speaking
about "humiliation", "war", to cease seeing
the violence of the parents vociferating on the
playgrounds, of the trainers incenting their
young people "to break the adversary", commentators
calling into question the arbitration
decisions... Zinédine Zidane, prefaced Une balle
pour la paix of Tayeb Belmihoub (www.uneballepourlapaix.
fr)... "This vision of football, vector of
peace, union, respect, education, enlightens
what one should never forget..." After the
debate, screening of the film of the "A ball for
Peace" operation: the first Blow given by
Zinédine Zidane who sends the ball to Yannick
Noah who makes the 2nd master key for Peace
with Nelson Mandela to whom Tayeb Belmihoub
will bring the ball to South Africa.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM JANE ADDAMS (without translation) By Une balle pour la Paix, in partnership with Réactions 10:30 - 12:00 a.m. In French only After the war in Congo-Brazzaville, a great number
of associations in France and abroad mobilized
to bring their support to that wounded
African region. Since 2002, following the initiative
of the Fédération Protestante de France,
associations have gathered in a platform to work
within the framework of the culture of peace in
Congo-Brazzaville. Other actions have been set
up with associations having very different
approaches: the one of the Congolese “diaspora”
in France or the one of Scouts et Guides de
France. We present the realisations and challenges
of our action and confront our approaches
and experience.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING(without translation) By UCJG-YMCA-France in partnership with Scouts et Guides de France and DEFAP 10:30 - 12:00 a.m. Violence and insecurity have become critical
obstacles for peace and for political stability in
Haiti. Active participation in the recent electoral
process testifies the will of the population to live
in peace and to overcome social injustices. In
this context, human rights organisations and
human rights defenders continue their longterm
work on citizenship and training programmes.
The main aim of this workshop is to make
known their efforts for the recomposition of
social links and for the participate in the reconstruction
of the State in Haiti. It aims also to
encourage the efforts and initiatives of international
solidarity towards the Haitian population.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM ROSA PARKS By CCFD, in partnership with Commission Justice et Paix-Haïti, Espace de Partenariat Franco-Haïtien and Coordination Europe-Haïti 10:30 - 12:00 a.m. Many NGOs have been trying for several years to
alert public opinion and governments to the danger
of cluster bombs, whose unacceptable
humanitarian consequences have been massively
observed in Laos, in Kosovo, in Afghanistan
or in Iraq. An international campaign has been
launched in 2003 in order to avoid that a similar
tragedy, comparable to that of landmines, could
recur in the next few years. After the vote in
Belgium of a law banning cluster bombs, what
are the prospects of a ban at the international
level and in France? Which role could citizen
mobilization have in this struggle ?
Speakers: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING By Handicap International, in partnership with the CDRPC 12:00 a.m. - 01:30 p.m. Placed under international focus during the tsunami
crisis, Sri Lanka is also a country wounded
for many years by a bloody civil war with multiple
causes (ethnic, religious, social, geopolitical).
Many Sri Lankan organisations try to work
on restoring peace. International mediation
efforts are also ongoing.
Speakers: ROOM IBRAHIM RUGOVA 12:00 a.m. - 01:30 p.m. In French only Raising children is not easy. No learning brings
to the parent the minimum knowledge to satisfactorily
fulfil his task, and yet s/he is overflowed
by, often contradictory, advice from everywhere,
among which it is difficult for him/her to choose.
How to choose one's position in the debate opposing
the defenders of a non-violent education to
the supporters of an education with physical violence
as a constituing principle? It is in order to
allow parents and educators to consciously
determine their position that the association “Ni claques ni fessées” tried to collect serious
scientific and historical information available on
this topic.
Speakers: ROOM JANE ADDAMS (without translation) 12:00 a.m. - 01:30 p.m. In French only After the war in the Balkans, many non-profit
organisations in France and around the world
initiated aid programs for this part of Europe. A
few years of relative peace can make it seem like
the emergency is over, yet tensions in the area
continue and are hardly assuaged. It is in this
region, without a doubt, that the culture of peace
needs to take hold. European institutions, intergovernmental
offices, ministries, and non-profit
organisations interact with each other through
long-term projects. Often, it is not only local, but
also regional work undertaken to develop nonprofit
organisations and civil society.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING By UCJG-YMCA-France, in partnership with OFAJ (Office Franco-Allemand pour la Jeunesse) 12:00 a.m. - 01:30 p.m. In India, Gandhi is considered as the father of the
nation and, in the whole world, as the father of
non-violence. But, today, what role does
Gandhi's non-violent heritage play in India? How
non-violence is known, taught, experienced 60
years after Gandhi's death ?
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM ROSA PARKS 01:30 - 03:00 p.m. Many armed conflicts are generated by the greediness
of some people to confiscate wealth in
order to take power or maintain themselves in
power. Civil society has taken some initiatives:
the "Publish What you Pay" campaign which
aims at making public the amount of money (of
any kind), paid to countries with natural resources,
and the Tax Havens campaign which aims at
fighting against territories allowing tax evasion,
money laundering, corruption and conflict financing.
These two initiatives have a common goal:
pushing for good governance through transparency
in order to finance development and
reduce poverty, thus promoting democracy and
peace.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING By the NGO Plateform "Publish what you Pay", in partnership with 10 member associations of the Plateform in France, among which Secours catholique - Caritas France 01:30 - 03:00 p.m. In French only How should civil societies act for peace and solidarity
to face up the unprecedented increase of
the repressive arsenal against immigrants
inside Europe, the increase in the number of
detention camps and of arbitrary detention of
asylum-seekers, the militarization of the
Mediterranean and the southern borders of
Maghreb to contain Sub-saharan immigration,
as a way and to reinforce Fortress Europe ?
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING (without translation) By CCFD 01:30 - 03:00 p.m. In French only Islamic thinking has approached the question of
violence to the living essentially under the legal
and ethical perspective. Violence is inevitable on
earth, but man can not use it on living beings and
especially not on men except in a strict framework
of justice wanted by God. From the question of animal
slaughtering to the question of behaviour
during wars, Islamic law traces moral rules under
the central idea that “God is the One that gives life;
He is the One who causes to die”. No human being
can assume the right to quit their life without
defying the divine transcendence.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM JANE ADDAMS (without translation) Par la Coordination française pour la Décennie en partenariat avec la Conférence Mondiale des Religions pour la Paix (CMRP) et le Mouvement International de la Réconciliation (MIR) 03:00 - 04:30 p.m. Life in the street, for both children and adults, is
very tough and violent. One's survival is subject
to moral, psychological and physical violence.
Our partners from Russia, Mali, Benin and Peru
have made the choice of non-violence and are
working to make this reality less unbearable. We
propose a space in which to exchange experiences
and debate initiatives.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING By Secours catholique - Caritas France, in partnership with Caritas Internationalis 03:00 - 04:30 p.m. In French only Our contribution is to examine UNESCO's action
as the UN lead agency for the International
Decade for a culture of peace and non-violence
for the children of the world (2001-2010). In this
meeting, we also present the activities of the
French National Commis-sion's working group.
This Working Group (consisting mainly of associations
involved in these issues, whose members
are represen-tatives of national NGOs) will
have the task of responding to the objectives of
this International Decade and in particular of
inviting civil society to promote the culture of
peace, combining energies and enhancing all
these actions at the national and international
level. One of the current priorities is the question
“how to get further ahead” ?
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM JANE ADDAMS (without translation) By Group "Culture of peace" of the French Commission for UNESCO 03:00 - 04:30 p.m. In French only Among the methods of non-violent action, civil
disobedience is a last step in the confronting
power: through collective and individual transgression
of law, it aims at creating a public
debate and contributing to the evolution of the
law. Continuing in the tradition of Thoreau and
Gandhi, through conscientious objection and the
reaping of GMOs, civil disobedience deserves to
be better recognised as a possible resource for
citizens in their fight for human rights.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING (without translation) By MAN, in partnership with Faucheurs Volontaires and Déboulonneurs 03:00 - 04:30 p.m. Peace cannot be decreed "top-down": it requires
a whole process of changing people, their
values, their representations, which would lead
to, according to Gramsci's phrase, a new “cultural
hegemony” based on peaceful and non-violent
attitudes. Lacking such ground, non-violent
processes might be reduced to voluntarist techniques.
During this workshop, we will explore
the different facets of such a culture: revivifying
democracy through a genuine dialogue between
people, enabling everyone to engage in a process
of forgiveness and reconciliation, arousing
dynamics of reciprocity between cultures in the
globalisation context.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM ROSA PARKS By Réseau Espérance 04:30 - 06:00 p.m. From theory and tools to the
compared analysis of practices
on differents continents
The European Union (Commission + Member
States) is the first donor in many Southern and
Eastern countries. It has equipped itself with different
foreign policy tools that place stability and
conflict resolution at the heart of its diplomacy:
support to regional peace processes, cooperation
for the building of sustainable peace, sending
troops and observers, political dialogue
based on the respect of human rights and of
democratic principles…
How to best mobilize this potential in favor of peace? A presentation of the theoretically available tools and a comparative analysis of their deployment in the different contexts (Central Africa, the Balkans, Latin America, Haiti). Speakers: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING By CCFD, in partnership with Centre de Recherche sur la Paix 04:30 - 06:00 p.m. In French only Unemployment and exclusion are forms of violence,
locked inside those it affects and consumes.
For thirty years, diverse initiatives have
been taken to organise collectively job-seekers
and to find innovative forms of solidarity between
employed people, on one side, and jobseekers
and excluded persons, on the other.
These initiatives of solidarity are in practice related
to the wisdom of "constructive resistance"
shown By non-violent movements in other surroundings.
Nevertheless, those two cultures
seem not to have come closer to each other and
do not cooperate. How can we establish closer
relationship between them in order to better
fight toge-ther against exclusion? That is the
question that is dealt within this workshop.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM JANE ADDAMS (without translation) By Solidarités nouvelles face au chômage 04:30 - 06:00 p.m. In French only Whatever their age and throughout the country,
young people fight against violence with the help
of adults. The fact that a young person can be a
mediator for his/her fellow students is becoming
more widely accepted. During this meeting, we
will show some extracts of the DVD “Mission
Mediation” with several testimonies from
various students. After the screening, we will
hold a debate with some high school mediators,
some theoreists and some educators.
Speakers: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING (without translation) By Génération Médiateurs 04:30 - 06:00 p.m. Our Earth is over-exploited and the questionable
results of globalisation confront us with the problem
of how to deal properly with our natural
resources. They tend either to disappear, to be
polluted or spoilt. The quality of life and the survival
of our future generations are threatened.
Inequalities are increasing everywhere, within
the same country, between countries and also
between North and South, jeopardizing chances
for peace. We must update our ideas on development.
Each one of us must live up to their responsibili-
ties and change their way of life.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM ROSA PARKS By Pax Christi France, in partnership with CMR, MRJC, CCFD, Secours catholique - Caritas France, Justice et Paix Saturday 3 June 10:30 - 12:00 a.m.In order to fight against ad invasion, a collective
of “adbusters” started a non-violent campaign of
civil disobedience in Paris, Rouen, Lyon,
Montpellier, Montauban, Le Mans… Media report
well on this action. Reports on FR3 will be planned
in this panel, which is meant to be a place of
exchange relating to the harm caused By advertisements and to the non-violent logic of actions of the “adbus-ters”. Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING By MAN 10:30 - 12:00 a.m. In French only Violence against women has, for a long time,
been hidden, or even considered as a taboo subject,
in European societies and elsew-here.
Today, numerous reports from governmental
and non-governmental organizations shed the
light on these forms of violence and on their terrible
consequences (humiliation, beating, injuries,
killings). The fight against these forms of
violence has become a major social enterprise in
various countries.
Speakers: ROOM JANE ADDAMS (without translation) By Amnesty International France 10:30 - 12:00 a.m. In French only Peace sciences witness rapid development.
Various institutes have been created lately all
over the world. They conduct research, offer
trainings, usually of very high quality, and intervene
in policies and practices. The field of study
is very vast: definition of peace and violence;
analysis, prevention and transformation of
conflicts; reconstruction, and various other specific
themes of peace of mul-tidisciplinary interest
(political and social sciences, gender studies,
etc.). The speakers present an overview of
their research and its results, as well as training
and career opportunities in this field.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING (without translation) By APRED, in partnership with PATRIR 10:30 - 12:00 a.m.
Since the beginning of the Millenium, the EU has
become an important player in peacebuilding
and conflict prevention. The Euro-pean
Peacebuilding Liaison Office has been active on
the European stage since 2001, with the aim of
promoting a sustainable pea-cebuilding policy.
This workshop aims to give an overview of
European policy in this area and how we can
interact with it. What are the European policies
in this area ? How can we influence them? And
how can we cooperate with the European
Institutions? These are the challenges for peace
actors at the European level.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM ROSA PARKS By the Quaker Council for European Affairs 12:00 a.m. - 01:30 p.m. The Decade to Overcome Violence of the World
Council of Churches (WCC) wishes to help us
rediscover our common humanity. It represents,
as well, a call to make us regret our own complicity
in violence and search, through our religious
traditions, means to overcome the spirit, the
logic and the practice of violence. We are called
upon by the vision of a Church, God's people in
motion, that combats all the divisions founded
on race, sex, age or culture and that works for
justice and peace for the safeguard of Creation.
Speakers: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING By the World Council of Churches (WCC) 12:00 a.m. - 01:30 p.m. In French only Training for activists, social and educational professionals
or other public… the aim is to analyze
the development of a conflict, from its real causes
to the elements which started the crisis and
the regulation processes through the specific
framework of a non-violent approach. Training in
how to communicate, how to face tensions better,
how to guarantee the framework, how to
ensure fair activi-ties in the group, so that each
person feels respected and that conflicts turn
into a chance of progress. We will discuss this
issue on the basis of testimonies of appropriate
methods of such trainings.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM JANE ADDAMS (without translation) By IFMAN (Institut de Formation du Mouvement pour une Alternative Non-violente), in partnership with FORM'ACTION 12:00 a.m. - 01:30 p.m. In French only Come discover how active non-violence has
tranformed and is transforming interpersonal,
social and international relations. Ariane and
Benoît Thiran will show us how we can break the
escalation of violence, approach conflict with
new eyes and defend oneself without striking
back. Hildegard Goss-Mayr and Adolfo Esquivel
will share concrete examples from their long
international expe-rience of how individuals and
societies have found, in faith-inspired active
non-violent, an ethic, a spiritual force and a
method in achieving justice and peace at all levels.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING (without translation) By MIR (IFOR France) 12:00 a.m. - 01:30 p.m. This workshop aims at exploring the various
attempts undertaken in different countries and
at the international level in the aim of promoting
peace and non-violence education. Participants
in the workshop from different European countries
present their school program projects,
aiming at establishing peace and non-violence
education as a full-fledged program in schools
at all educational levels. The International
Coalition for the Decade also presents its draft
international declaration on children's right to
violence-free education and to peace and nonviolence
education.
Speakers: ROOM ROSA PARKS By the International Coalition for the Decade, the French Coalition for the Decade and the Italian Coalition for the Decade 01:30 - 03:00 p.m. From day one of the war in Former Yugoslavia,
some European local communities mobilized
themselves to oppose the conflict and support
the towns concerned by it. Bonds have then been
created and have continued for more than 15
years, intended to streng-then peace and develop
local democracy. The European Council
wished to support this process by developing in
1993 the Local Democracy Agencies Program.
Since 1993, the 11 agencies' network undertakes projects based on decentralized international cooperation. By now, the network is composed of more than 200 local and regional communities and associations, coming from 21 European countries. Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING By ADL Kosovo, in partnership with the Association des Agences de la Démocratie Locale 01:30 - 03:00 p.m. In French only What if, in order to consider the phenomenon of
conjugal violence in its totality, we focus on violent
actors? The aim is to help those men and
women with violent behaviour in their conjugal
relationships to express their sufferings. It is
this suffering that is considered to be the source
of such violent behaviour. During the panel,
Yvette Bailly demonstrates her experience in
Quebec where a program has been set up to this
effect. Pascal Cuenot, psychologist, has worked
in cooperation with the association
“Parenthèses à la vio-lence” at Belfort for 14
years, which is one of the few institutions in
France that meets violent individuals and offers
them social and psychological support. He
reports also on his experience.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM JANE ADDAMS (without translation) By MAN, in partnership with Parenthèses à la violence 01:30 - 03:00 p.m. In French only Since February 2005, the Palestinian village of
Bil'in, West of the city of Ramallah, has become
the symbol of the non-violent strug-gle of the
Palestinians against the Israeli occupation and
the construction of the Wall. Every Friday,
Palestinians, along with hun-dreds of Israelis,
protest non-violently against the construction of
the Wall in their village. These protests represent
a new kind of solidarity from the Israelis
with the Palestinians. It has proved efficient and
shows that a non-violent struggle can be fruitful.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING (without translation) By the French NGOs Platform for Palestine, in partnership with 39 member associations of the Platform, including the CCFD 01:30 - 03:00 p.m. In many Central and Eastern European countries,
transition from post-communist regimes
to democracy, was accompanied by a strong civil
society mobilisation, especially young people
who, through their own organisations, wish to
promote democracy and responsible citizenship.
Events in Serbia (2000), Georgia (2003) and
Belarus (2004) have shown, among others, the
success of these movements where creative and
non-violent means triggered the fall of authoritarian
governments. At a time when Belarus is
looking for its own way, this workshop allows the
encounter of men and women who have been
involved in these groups.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM ROSA PARKS By Initiatives et Changement, in partnership with the Center for Political Education and Foundations for Freedom 03:00 - 04:30 p.m. To be able to make peace, it is useful to be aware
of the obstacles. Divisions, violence and exclusions
often give rise to mutual ignorance.
Language problems and linguistic human rights
are taboo subjects: public debate is avoided and
people are hesitant to talk about hegemony and
discrimination. However, communication, in
order to become a vehicle of peace, has to have
an egalitarian basis and be within the reach of
the majority. Speakers will give their analyses
and international experiences. They will answer
the question: “How to create peaceful relations
and promote better understanding between
human beings?”.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING By Espéranto, in partnership with JEFO (Jeunes Espérantistes), UFE (Esperanto France) and SAT (Sennacieca Asocio Tutmonda) 03:00 - 04:30 p.m. In French only Muslims and Christians are bound to live close
together in the future. It is important to encourage
interreligious dialogue so that the meeting
among different cultures, religions and peoples
can be considered as a chance to grow in humanity.
Many experiences are on their way.
Methods, results, difficulties are different,
depending on the countries where they are held,
and we can learn from one another's experiences.
In this workshop, Lebanese and French who
participate in inter-religious dialogue will
exchange and share their ideas with the
audience.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM JANE ADDAMS (without translation) By Pax Christi France, in partnership with the Association des femmes pour la paix au Liban 03:00 - 04:30 p.m. In French only This meeting, which gathers several economic
actors, aims at raising awareness about different
initiatives that already exist in the economic
field. Opposed to the traditional and capitalist
system, these initiatives help the creation of
socially useful enterprises in order to restore
humanism and respect for democratic values.
This initiative is supported by the European
Social Fund.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING (without translation) By Fédération des CIGALES, in partnership with Garrigue 03:00 - 04:30 p.m. Pierre Weil, founder of UNIPAZ (International
Holistic University of Peace-City of Peace
Foundation) in Brasilia, has created a programme
for peace education which is applied in
several countries throughout South America and
Europe. UNIPAZ proposes a global and transdisciplinary
approach to peace education with
which participants learn to identify the roots of
our conflicts and how to transform them. The
work is done on three levels: peace within ourselves
(individual ecology), peace with others
(social ecology) and peace with nature (environmental
ecology). These same principals are
applied in the JUNIPER programme in Great
Britain.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM ROSA PARKS By UNIPAZ Europe, in partnership with UNIPAZ Great Britain, UNIPAZ France and UNIPAZ Belgium 04:30 - 06:00 p.m. Arnaud Blin, author of the geopolitical and geostrategic
directory Puissances et Influences, and of
the chapter on "Peace, demilitarization and fight
against war, free exchange and debt" in 100 proposals
of the Word Social Forum, General Jean Cot,
author of Parier pour la paix, Richard Petris,
Director of the Ecole de la Paix (School of Peace)
and author of La conversion des industries d'armement
and Mohamed Larbi Bouguerra who wrote
Les Batailles de l'eau (col: Enjeux Planete), all
published by the Editions Charles Leopold
Mayer, will exchange views and solutions to
build a world where the word peace is no more a
wish but a reality.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING By Association des Editions Charles Léopold Mayer, in partnership with Ecole de la Paix 04:30 - 06:00 p.m. In French only Peace should not be limited to the “silence of
weapons”. It is a daily struggle in the economic,
social and political fields. The Culture of Peace
involves actions to respect all human rights, to
promote social progress and preserve the environment.
Thus, it applies to the “Sustainable
Development” concept. Can the review of urban
violence be fully objective if the variety of discriminations
inhabitants are suffering from is not
taken into account? As regards the actors, which
type of alliance between elected representatives
and associations can best address urban and
suburban specific issues and propose realistic
solutions?
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM JANE ADDAMS (without translation) By AFCDRP, in partnership with Jean-Charles Dionisi, Direction Générale des Services de la Mairie de Saint- Ouen (93) 04:30 - 06:00 p.m. In French only Human Rights have permitted to limit State violence
against individuals. The next step would be
to guarantee that States limit their violence
against other States, against foreigners and
against humanity in general. Different ways are
conceivable, so that our institutions do not make
use of the monopoly of force that they possess.
This could be possible, for example, through
deepening peace sciences and peace education,
promoting the human right to peace, creating
peace zones and showing the place of peace in
sustainable development.
Speakers: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING (without translation) By APRED Association pour la non-militarisation et la démilitarisation, in partnership with PATRIR 04:30 - 06:00 p.m. Scientists denounce the return
of a nuclear arms race in France,
Britain, the USA and Iran...
For few years, the USA, Britain and France have
given new orientations to their nuclear military
programs. These orientations confirm the rehabilitation
of nuclear weapons and a radical
change from a strategy of deterrence to a new
doctrine based on aggression through the
concept of "nuclear preventive wars". In parallel,
numerous transfers of nuclear technologies
have been operated by the very same nuclear
powers who now reproach Iran for seeking a
nuclear bomb. The escalation has started... it is
high time to stop it!
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM ROSA PARKS By Greenpeace Sunday 4 June 10:30 - 12:00 a.m.The case of Great Britain
The structural and psychological violence exercised
on asylum seekers has often been described
as “secondary torture”. There has been less
awareness of the economic and psychosocial
violence brought about by the merchandization
of the reception process. In Great Britain, with its
imposed “business model”, the challenge of this
phenomenon has been particularly strongly felt.
But this model is spreading. How can we respond
to it? Input from Great Britain, Germany
and France.
Speakers: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING By Quaker International Center of Paris 10:30 - 12:00 a.m. In French only France carried out 210 nuclear tests including 50
aerial tests in the Algerian Sahara and in Polynesia
between 1960 and 1996 to obtain the atomic weapon,
pivot of the defense policy and update its
nuclear arsenal. Health consequences on the populations
and on the staff have always been denied by
the French authorities. Recent reports and enquiries
have shown that those tests were as dirty as the
Anglo-American tests, from which the French
authorities always wished to be differenciated. The
workshop underlines the dangerous nature of those
tests and the severe diseases that ensue from them,
and the fight of associations to make it known. The
members of Parliament are requested to vote a law
and create an indemnification fund for the victims of
nuclear testing.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM JANE ADDAMS (without translation) By Association des Vétérans des Essais Nucléaires - AVEN, in partnership with the CDRPC 10:30 - 12:00 a.m. In French only "Times have gone when men could with no
major damage develop the society without entering
themselves into personal change". This
sentence by René Macaire (1916-1993), initiator
of Réseaux Espérance, summarizes the topic
which is tackled during this workshop. So far,
society has been able to survive among violence.
From now on, its repression takes place at the
risk of humanity. It must be dried up at its very
source, which reminds us of our own violence. It
is both a personal and a collective task, and a
new stage in the evolution of the human being.
The choice of non-violence as a life practice
(praxis) is the path to it. Three contributors testify,
each one in their own field.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING (without translation) By Réseau Espérance 10:30 - 12:00 a.m. Civilians play an increasingly important role in
crisis situations in terms of human rights monitoring,
international accompaniment of local
activists and local populations, mediation and
rebuilding of civil society, support to local organisations
acting for democracy, etc. Missions of
Civil Peace Interventions draw on 20 years of
experience of non-governmental organisations.
They have proven to be operational alternatives
when official diplomatic initiatives have failed,
and when military action is both impossible and
inadequate. This panel gives an insight into the
topic of Civil Peace Interventions, including an
introduction about existing European networks.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM ROSA PARKS By ICP Committee (French Committee for Civil Peace Intervention), composed of the CCFD, Collectif Guatemala, Comité de solida-rité avec les Communautés du Bas Atrato, EpB, IRNC, MAN, PBIFrance and Pax Christi France 12:00 a.m. - 01:30 p.m. Testimonies from 3 local NGOs based in Thailand,
Sri Lanka, Indonesia. In times of globalization, the
“dalit” tamil minority, native Dayak populations of
Indonesia, Burmese migrants or muslims in
Thailand are some of the marginalized communities
in Asia which are facing serious political, economic
and cultural discriminations. To protect the
rights of these communities, but also to promote
the dialogue towards peace, intellectuals and militants
mobilize themselves and associate publications,
advocacy and concrete actions of accompaniment
of the concerned populations.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING By CCFD 12:00 a.m. - 01:30 p.m. In French only In modern sports, the cult of the winner and of
the performance is also a machine to produce
losers. Are other sports possible? Then, let's
change it together and create new convivial
practices around the following principles:
Everyone plays (no elimination) - Each one can
progress - Each one can have a sense of responsibility
in practice - Unity of the differences is
cultivated through sharing knowledge - associativity
is developed... The FSGT invites you to this
debate, based on its experiences in the field of
educational competition among children, selfmanaged

finally recognized the important contributions
women make to building and reconstructing
peace. In an unanimous, historical decision, they
adopted resolution 1325. In the years that followed,
women's visibility in peace processes has
markedly increased, as have the efforts taken by
governments to include women. This workshop
will discuss this resolution, as well as some of
the follow-up efforts taken, including national
action plans to which many governments have
committed themselves.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM ROSA PARKS By WILPF 01:30 - 03:00 p.m. Women rarely are the ones who declare war. And
once war is there, they not often take part in it.
But, especially in these times of civil war and
"low-intensity wars", they and their children are
the main victims. This is why, in all parts of the
world, women are on the forefront of the struggle
to propose other solutions to conflict than
fighting with arms, solutions which invariably
seek to create justice.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING By Réseau Espérance 01:30 - 03:00 p.m. In French only The question of peace and, in particular, of
peace education is a fundamental element for
scouts. By favouring personal development and
searching for an ideal of brotherhood and
understanding, scouts play a huge role in favour
of peace. For a long time, Scouts et Guides de
France undertake many actions on the theme of
peace: Amahoro programme for peace education
in the Great Lakes region, scout discovery
camps for young people from the suburbs.
Speakers: ROOM JANE ADDAMS (without translation) By Scouts et Guides de France, in partnership with other scout associations 01:30 - 03:00 p.m. Disarmament for Development? As military
spending exceeds once again $1,000 billion
annually, this is not only a slogan but the theme
of a new campaign which could involve all civil
society sectors. The impact of landmines on
development is well known; what about light
weapons, depleted uranium, Agent Orange, or
cluster bombs? And what can we do?
International Peace Bureau is looking for partners
worldwide to mobilize an effective opposition
to the militaristic policies of governments
and private companies engaged in the "long
war" against terrorism.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM ROSA PARKS By the International Peace Bureau 01:30 - 03:00 p.m. In French only The African continent presents itself very often
from a suffering perspective. But groups committed
to active non-violence, gospel-based or
inspired by humanistic values, carry out grassroot
work with great competence and courage.
Our workshop wants to offer an opportunity to
share these both rich and concrete experiences.
Our witnesses will talk about their quest for
truth with young people in Rwanda in order to
free up their capacity to act and about the persistent
and creative commitment for justice and
reconciliation of a group in the Democratic
Republic of Congo.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING (without translation) By MIR in partnership with GANVE and UMUSEKE 03:00 - 04:30 p.m. Media are occupying a growing place in our
society, but journalists often tend to give priority
to alarmist statements. They forget to underline
positive initiatives and efforts towards peace and
reconciliation. Worse, they sometimes get actively
involved in conflicts, as shown by the terrible
example of the Rwanda genocide. Yet media
personnel can contribute to dialogue and reconciliation
in all areas. This workshop will address
this issue and present some of the initiatives
taking place in this field, with different approaches.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING By Initiatives of Change, in partnership with Press Agency Infosud, Reporters d'espoir, Agence Syfia International, International Me-dia Support and Institut Panos Paris 03:00 - 04:30 p.m. In French only The French NGOs Platform for Palestine is carrying,
in 2006, its Campaign against the Wall and
for the end of the occupation of the Palestinian
territories. The Wall, whose construction in and
around Jerusalem has been very intense, represents
the conclusion of the policy of annexation
and colonisation that has been carried out by
Israel in Jerusalem for 40 years with the objective
of proclaiming an only-Israeli sovereignty on
the city. In order to put an end to this fait accompli
policy that would be a major obstacle to peace
between Israelis and Palestinians, the French
NGOs Platform for Palestine and its members
decided to echo back the action of Palestinian
and Israeli civil societies in favor of a just and
long-lasting peace.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM JANE ADDAMS (without translation) By Plateforme des ONG françaises pour la Palestine, in partnership with 39 member associations of the Plateforme, Secours catholique - Caritas France included 03:00 - 04:30 p.m. This participatory workshop explores the role of
civic nonviolent action in campaigns for basic
rights such as human rights, minority rights,
gender rights, and social and economic equity.
Participants will acquire an overview of the key
generic concepts and princi-ples of civilianbased
nonviolent struggle. It is facilitated by
Shaazka Beyerle, Vice President of the

action strategy in lower Atrato
In the Lower Atrato region, a strategic isolated
region in Northwest Colombia, Afro-Colombian
populations organise themselves to resist armed
and economic aggressions. As the inheritors of
experiences of peace Communities, ASCOBA
organisation - Association of Community
Councils and Organisations of Lower Atrato -
struggles to defend life and the respect of political,
economic and cultural rights in a context of
armed violence. An ASCOBA representative will
bear witness to this community organisation
experience, and the French Solidarity
Committee to Lower Atrato Communities, which
has been part of this experience since 1997, will
present its action in favour of a local experience
of peace building.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING By Ecole de la paix - CCFD, in partnership with Comité de solidarité avec les communautés du Bas Atrato (CCFD, Ecole de la paix, MAN, ACAT, Pax Christi, FPH) 04:30 - 06:00 p.m. In French only Peace research requires to work on Evil and,
above all, on what is viewed today as the crime of
the crimes: genocide (See Jacques Sémelin,
Purifier et Détruire, usages politiques des massacres et
génocides, Paris, Le Seuil, 2005). Is it possible to
break up the principal steps leading to the project
of exterminating an entire people? Is it possible
to work up early warning indicators, aiming
at alerting an international mobilisation, in order
to prevent the worst? One has to have the will to
interfere. Which role could NGOs play?
Speakers: ROOM JANE ADDAMS (without translation) 04:30 - 06:00 p.m. In French only Nuclear weapons are currently proliferating
more than ever with modernization programs in
the nuclear States and new possible States
becoming nuclear. North Korea, Iran and some
others are typical examples. In this meeting, all
these cases and their links to the new postures
of Nuclear States will be studied. Proposals for a
way-out of the crisis will also be presented. The
Mayors for Peace campaign of Hiroshima mayor,
civil disobedience rallies in Belgium and other
possible initiatives will be discussed. Some
opportunities of action in France by Abolition
2000 NGOs will also be presented.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM MARTIN LUTHER KING (without translation) By Stop Essais Abolition des armes nucléaires 04:30 - 06:00 p.m. For the last years, Nepal, one of the poorest
countries in the world, has lived a civil war opposing
monarchic authority and the Maoïst guerilla.
Civil population has been the hostage of
both camps. In April and May 2006, the brave
demonstrations of the democratic opposition
allowed a comeback to a parliamentary system.
In this difficult situation, several movements of
education for peace and non-violence have
grown.
Speakers: Moderator: ROOM ROSA PARKS By Partage in partnership with Bikalpa Gyan Kendra Simultaneous English and French translation will be only provided for all the workshops that take place in rooms Ibrahim Rugova et Rosa parks French Coalition for the Decade
